My Past Me

When I looked at that picture of you

I felt I was staring at myself

Some old black and white

Snapped on a day I had forgotten

But you lived and died before my time

Before television and rockets

Before rice krispie treats

And nail clippers

Would you find me amusing?

I don’t know how to pluck a chicken

Or milk a cow

I can’t even speak a word of Slovak

But I can cook burgers on a gas grill

I know how to drive a car

And send an e-mail

I can even speak Japanese

But where would we meet?

The two of us who share the same genetic ancestors

The same long face and brown eyes

I guess we could start with a glass of wine

A toast

A smile
